Full of curves: Silvretta high-mountain road

Full of curves: Silvretta high-mountain road

By car, motorcycle or bicycle: The Silvretta Hochalpenstraße High Alpine Road is the real deal. 34 turns and 2,000 m elevation separate the Bielerhöhe from Partenen in Montafon. The road terminates in Galtür in Paznauntal in Tyrol.

Uniting the towns of Montafon with Paznauntal valley in Tyrol, this curvy mountain road was first opened to traffic in 1954 and is one of the most popular mountain routes in the Alps. Guests on this route can’t help but be impressed by the rugged mountain scenery. Once on top, a high plateau opens up and features the Silvretta reservoir with great views of the partial glacier at over 3,000 m on the border to Switzerland. This is the highest mountain in Vorarlberg: the 3,312-m Piz Buin.

The Silvrettasee restaurant and Silvretta-Haus are perfect locations to stop in for refreshments or a bite to eat. The latter was recognised for its modern Alpine architecture and received the renowned Piranesi prize.

The Bielerhöhe is the starting point for high-Alpine tours and leisurely hikes, e.g. around the Silvretta reservoir.

The Silvretta Hochalpenstraße High Alpine Road is only open in summer and requires a toll.
