Schnepfau

Where the valley floor widens between Mellau and Au at the foot of the magnificent Kanisfluh massif, this village at 735 m elevation is home to 450 inhabitants. In earlier times, one of the most important “cheese counts” in Bregenzerwald once resided here.

Culture & Events

The erstwhile Gasthaus Adler inn was once the residential apartment of Gallus Moosbrugger (1810-1886), who was the most powerful cheese count in all of Bregenzerwald. His businesses exported cheese as far as Vienna and Italy and his family also owned a city palace in Milan and even had a theatre box at the Milan Scala.

Activities

Numerous peaks and mountains can be conquered from Schnepfau. There are also ample routes for mountain bikers and cyclists. In winter, the Damüls-Mellau and Au-Schoppernau ski areas are located nearby.

Tips

  • Fantastic views of the north face of the Kanisfluh massif can be enjoyed from some hiking trails, like the one leading to Bizau. Guests can savour such special views, along with delicious food, from the Gasthaus Kanisfluh inn above the town centre.
