Krumbach

This village of about 1,000 inhabitants in northern Bregenzerwald is situated at 730 m elevation amidst a landscape of gentle rolling hills.

The village motto is “showing the courage for new things.” Architects have been working on the village’s appearance for decades. The large bus terminal and the design of the village centre with both new and traditional buildings are seen as role models.

Culture & Events

Krumbach has been drawing international praise for many years. The small municipality invited architects from around the world to re-imagine seven local bus stops, which are referred to as “waiting houses” in the local dialect. Architects from Russia, Norway, Belgium, Spain, Chile, Japan and China participated. Each architecture office collaborated with a local architect or craftsman from Vorarlberg. Since their debut, these novel constructions have been a popular attraction.

Moorwirte innkeepers provide out-of-the-ordinary insights into the region’s gourmet culture. Herbs and plants from the local moor are featured in their kitchens, inviting guests to enjoy special moor breakfasts or other cultural events.

Activities

Walking from bus stop to bus stop has become a novel new diversion in Krumbach. A trail leads through the Krumbach Moor, a natural gem and habitat for many plants and animals. Fantastic trails in the nearby mountains invite visitors to lace up their hiking boots whilst routes for bicycles and mountain bikes crisscross the landscape. Krumbach is ideal for picturesque winter hikes and the nearby Alpenarena Hochhäderich or the small Riefensberg-Hochlitten ski areas are a skier’s delight. The Sulzberg area is great for cross-country skiing.
