Egg

With around 3,600 inhabitants, Egg is the largest village in Bregenzerwald at 560 m elevation.

Visitors to the village centre must cross a bridge regardless of their direction or origin. The Gschwendtobelbrücke is a bridge between Egg and Lingenau that is only accessible via hiking trails. Alois Negrelli planned the covered wooden bridge over the Subersach river, a masterpiece of engineering and carpentry, in 1834. In his later years, Negrelli played a key role in the planning of the Suez Canal.

Culture & Events

The ‘Egg’ museum near the parish church features changing exhibitions. To receive insights into contemporary rural farm culture, a visit to the Metzler family farmhouse demonstrates the potential of rural innovation and sustainable development. A few years ago, the Metzler family opened Vorarlberg’s first open farm. In addition to an alpine dairy school and a facility where the Metzler family produces cosmetics made from whey and herbs that opened in 2017, visitors can tour the enclosures for cows and sheep. The small-animal petting zone is popular with kids. Naturally, the broad range of farm products, from cream cheese to whey products, can be purchased at the farm shop.

Activities

There are numerous hiking trails to choose from in summer. At seven especially beautiful vantage points located around the village of Egg, wooden furniture created by a Bregenzerwald craftsman has been erected. Egg is also a great place to start cycling or mountain-bike tours. An approx. 10-km cycle path along the track line of the former Bregenzerwaldbahn railway leads for instance alongside the Bregenzerache to the village of Doren. Guests love the nearby Egg-Schetteregg ski area in winter in addition to the nearby Niedere-Andelsbuch-Bezau ski area, just a few kilometres away.
