Damüls

The village of Damüls, which is located way up high at 1,430 m, is home to 300 inhabitants. This figure does not include the many hotel and inn employees nor the summer and winter guests.

Like many high-elevation villages in Vorarlberg, Damüls was settled in the 13th and 14th centuries by the Walser people. With its many frescoes that portray Biblia pauperum (the Paupers’ Bible), a visit to the church that was formed during this period is worthwhile for all those with an interest in art history.

Culture & Events

Damüls is home to a small cultural centre with museum called the “Kulisse Pfarrhof.” An exhibition provides insights into the history of the village and of winter sports. The musical series “Walser im Wald” (Walser people in the Bregenzerwald) is presented weekly in summer from mid July to the end of August. In cooperation with the Landeskonservatorium Vorarlberg, classical music concerts take place at the parish church whilst rock music is featured in the parsonage.

Activities

Numerous hiking trails via Alpine meadows to scenic peaks start in Damüls. The fresh mountain air is therapeutic. Even during the height of summer heat, temperatures remain comfortable at the higher climes. During winter, skiers access the slopes directly from their hotel or apartment doors. For some years now, the ski resorts of Damüls and Mellau have been united via new cable cars and lifts. From funparks to child-friendly adventure areas, there is something for every skier here. Investments continue to be made in the improved comfort and expanded snowmaking system.

Tips

  • The nearly three-hour Damüls-Runde takes ski enthusiasts through the entire skiing area and to special stops.
  • After all, the terrain in the Damüls mountains is perfect for freeriding and ski tours and fantastic powder snow slopes and attractive routes abound. The best views can be enjoyed from the vantage points located at altitudes up to 2,000 metres.
  • Once per week during a technical tour through the mountain station, interested visitors can discover the inner workings of the Mellaubahn cable car. This special tour highlighting the architecture is personally led by the head of operations himself.
  • The 2.5 km long natural sledging track is lit from 7:30 to 9:30 pm every Wednesday and Friday (arrive comfortably to the starting point via the Uga chair lift).
