„Lovers“
The logo of the exhibition is a figure of Cupid created by Angelika Kauffmann issuing a warning above love. Cupid’s request to take a serious look at love is in stark contrast to the moral message of many of Kauffmann’s historical paintings. Taking this tension as a basis, the “Lovers” exhibition attempts to bring out exemplary groups of topics from Kauffmann’s study of the most human of all passions. In various allegorical series, the artist presents love as a conflict between the reluctant powers of vice and virtue, of feelings and reason. Kauffmann’s concept of ideal love was based on these appealing moral scenes: in line with the sentimental cult of friendship prevalent in her time, she found it realised in true friendship. Lovers are only rarely happy in Angelika Kauffmann’s historic paintings. “The dream of happiness” remains that – a dream. Her heroines are frequently abandoned lovers such as Ariadne, Penelope and Calypso. The visitor encounters central lovers and icons of sadness in Kauffmann’s works. With numerous Cupids, Graces and nymphs, the exhibition also displays the spirit of the rococo style, which played its own game with love.

Women's Museum in Hittisau
10 July – 26 October 2011
CELEBRATIONS. STRUGGLES. 100 years of Women’s Day
“Equal rights for women!” was the demand made by the 10,000 men and women marching across Vienna’s ring road on 19 March 1911. Women’s suffrage was the main demand of the first Austrian Women’s Day. March 2011 sees the 100th anniversary of Women’s Day in Austria. Events such as Women’s Day, associated with the courage of one’s convictions, non-violent resistance, participative democracy and equal rights, deserves its place in the collective memory of the Republic. Photos, posters, banners, film documents, badges and newspaper reports clearly document the very eventful history of Women’s Day in Austria and in Vorarlberg.
