Recommended ski tours for novices: Hirschberg

Wonderful ski mountaineering terrain in a former ski slope area.

In winter, the Bizau side valley is a place of peace. Still, the Hirschberg mountain is not completely uncrowded in winter. As the Hirschberg mountain is known to be nearly safe from avalanches, it attracts both ski mountaineers and snowshoe hikers.

Book recommendation to interested ski mountaineers:
"Ski Tour Guide for the Bregenzerwald region and the Großes Walsertal valley and the Lechquellengebirge mountain range" by A. Kempf / R. Kempf published by Panico Alpinverlag (in German)

Village: Bizau, 681 m, in a peaceful side valley between Bezau and Schnepfau.
Starting point: Hut, Base station of the Hirschberg chairlift (operating only in summer), 790 m, spacious car park.
Ascent time: Base station – Top station 1.75 hrs., Top station – Hirschberg mountain - plateau 45 mins.
Difference in altitude: 870
Requirements: Easy ski tour across former ski slopes ideally suited for skiers, some of them formerly marked as black (=demanding) in the slope plan. After the top station, the terrain decreases in steepness.
Slope direction: Northwest, southwest
Avalanche risk: Hardly ever, risk can be almost excluded if an adequate route is chosen.
Recommended season: December – Beginning of March
Tour: The peak of the Hirschberg mountain is hardly ever climbed as the long traverse from the former ski area to the Mittlere Hirschbergalpe pasture is quite flat and often at avalanche risk. From there, the route leads across the Obere Hirschbergalpe pasture and via the southern slopes of the Hirschberg mountain to the peak.
Description: Follow the former Hirschberg downhills lope from the base station. The lower part, however, is very exposed to the sun and thus there is sometimes a lack of snow. After approx. 100 meters in altitude, the exposition change and thus the snow conditions are good for the further ascent. As you want, you can choose the ascent across the Hirschberg downhills lope or across the steeper FIS downhill slope. These two slopes converge again at the top station (1,436m). Then pass the station on the left and walk via the sunny hills to the top station of the Plattenkogel lift or pass the old base station of the lift heading towards to the more northwest-facing powder-snow slopes of the Stöckler lift and up to the western point of the ridge leading to the Hirschberg mountain. Descent like ascent, whereas there are two more ski routes besides the former ski slopes. An old ski slope plan with the marked optional ski routes can be found at the base station.
Recommendation: ROTHER Ski Tour Guide by Stefan Herbke published by Bergverlag Rother in Munich (German)
