"Horizon Field" by Antony Gormley

A unique landscape installation amid Vorarlberg's, Austria's high Alpine regions.
Presented by Kunsthaus Bregenz

Horizon Field von Antony Gormley - www.kunsthaus-bregenz.atScenic Kunsthaus Bregenz has developed a truly unique landscape project in collaboration with the British artist Antony Gormley, which can be admired amid Vorarlberg's mountains between August 2010 and April 2012: »Horizon Field« consists of one hundred, life-size sculptures of the human body – which are spread all over a 150 km² terrain, forming a horizontal line at 2039 meters above sea level. This specific location has not only a metaphoric or symbolic reason but reflects the artist's experiences of the Alpine scenery. Despite its high altitude location the area is easily accessible in everyday life. This installation has been - so far - the biggest artistic intervention in Austria.

The ultimate »Horizon Field« project – taking place in Bregenzerwald and the neighboring Arlberg region with its villages Mellau, Schoppernau, Schröcken, Warth, Mittelberg, Lech, Klösterle and Dalaas – is the first artistic attraction of its kind at such a high altitude. Antony Gormley ranks among the most renowned artists and sculptors in Great Britain and also world-wide. His art objects revolve around human beings and their complex connections in the field of society, architecture and nature. Focusing on his own body, he is able to create an infinite number of figures and sculptures in countless different constellations – either as single art objects or as an ensemble of varied sculptures.

Already in summer 2009, Kunsthaus Bregenz hosted a comprehensive exhibition of Antony Gormley's masterpieces. A great success in Austria and abroad. Last year's exhibition was reason enough to present Gormley's sculpture project to a bigger audience. The venue of this very special exhibition was carefully selected, centering on idyllic landscapes of awesome natural beauty. Sensibility and vulnerability characterize the installation. A part of the sculptures can be found on walking routes in summer or along ski trails in winter. Others will be visible from far but not accessible at all.
